Description of the work in partner programmes

Austria

  • FFG Bottom up program (continuous), FFG;
    The topics of the programme are industrial research and development projects without any specific thematic focus. The main target group is industry and up to 50% of the individual project costs will be funded by a mix of grants and loans. In 2003 up to 40 wood research projects were funded. www.ffg.at
  • Factory of tomorrow (2000 - 2007), Austrian Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology - BMVIT (Bundesministerium für Verkehr, Innovation und Technologie), FFG; The topics of the programme are zero-waste and zero-emission technologies and methods of production, increased use of renewable raw materials for materials and products, increased use of renewable sources of energy in the production process and in the enterprise as a whole, and development of new partnerships and co-operations as well as in-house models for further training and participation of employees in order to achieve these objectives. In 2004 38 projects (from university, industry, non-profit organisations, research organisations and others depending on the project type) were funded. http://www.fabrikderzukunft.at/english.htm
  • Building of tomorrow (1999 - 2007), Austrian Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology - BMVIT (Bundesministerium für Verkehr, Innovation und Technologie), FFG;
    The focus of the programme is to develop technologies for sustainable development of products for tomorrow using the materials of tomorrow. The topic studied is the research and development programme which fosters the development of buildings, components, prefabricated building parts and building methods corresponding with the main principles of sustainable development.

    In 2003 there were funded 29 projects (basic research, concepts (for new buildings and reconstruction), applied research, demonstration projects, industrial research projects). http://www.hausderzukunft.at/english.htm
  • Industrial competence centres and networks program (1999 - 2004), Austrian Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology - BMVIT (Bundesministerium für Verkehr, Innovation und Technologie), FFG;
    There are two lines of action: 1) Centres of Excellence (k ind): Industrial competence centres serve the targeted development and strengthening of internationally competitive technology clusters; 2) Networks of Excellence (k net): Competence networks consist of a number of competence nodes from the fields of science and industry in those areas of technology where there is competence and/or demand in different locations.

    The competence centres can be set up anywhere where networking, a thematic focus and intensification of research and development cooperation between industry and science increase existing industrial and scientific competence and enhance its practical value to industry. The individual themes are demand-oriented and take specifically into account local approaches.

    In the year 2003 8 new competence centres and networks were funded, and todau there are 14 centres and 8 networks up and running. http://www.kompetenzzentren.biz/index.mc?lid=2
  • Kplus competence centres program (1998 - open), Austrian Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology - BMVIT (Bundesministerium für Verkehr, Innovation und Technologie), FFG; The Kplus program improves cooperation between the business and research sectors through the establishment of competence centres and bridging the gap between science and industry. Kplus aims to build long-term cooperative initiatives between public and private research at an advanced level. There is no special focus on technologies or technical fields.

    Today there are 18 active competence centers (1 Kplus WOOD ). http://www.tig.or.at/en/fundingprogramms/Kplus/index.html
