Finland

  • Wood Wisdom (1998-2001). The National Technology Agency Tekes, Academy of Finland, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and Ministry of Trade and Industry

    The Finnish Forest Cluster Research Programme Wood Wisdom aimed to raise the competitiveness of forestry and forest-based and related industries in the changing operating environment. The programme was multidisciplinary and combined basic research, applied research and RTD targeting specific industrial applications. The projects comprise both mechanical wood processing and pulp and paper production from end products to forest.

  • The National Wood Energy Technology Programme (1999-2004), Tekes
    The programme on developing the production technology and improving the quality of forest chips from logging residues and small-sized trees.
    This is to be achieved mainly by increasing the production of chips from logging residues from regeneration areas. In addition, technology to promote the energy use of small-sized trees from early thinnings because is developed as well as quality control and storage of wood fuels.
    The programme was extended to the small-scale production and use of wood fuels. Here the aim is to develop competitive, reliable and acceptable, small-scale (usually under 1 MW) wood fuel production systems. Especially companies are encouraged in this programme to implement product development projects.

  • Value Added Wood Chain Programme (1999-2003), Tekes
    The purpose of the programme is to increase the use and value added characteristics of Finnish wood products and promote international cooperation in wood processing and related industries. Increasing the use of wood as a construction material in the EU is a strategic focus of the programme.
    The programme is made up of R&D and basic research projects undertaken by private enterprise, research institutions and universities.
